Two main parts of the thesis present the candidates, pre-election debates, campaigns, pre-election surveys and the results of the presidential elections in 2013 and 2018. Further, I have evaluated the impacts of the direct presidential elections. The last part pays particular attention to prospects for the 2023 elections.
Attitude of czech daily press Lidové noviny, Mladá fronta Dnes a Právo to direct election of the president of the Czech republic
Kottová, Anna ; Kraus, Jiří (advisor) ; Jirák, Jan (referee)
My thesis named "Attitude of Czech dailies Lidové noviny, Mladá fronta Dnes and Právo to the first direct Czech presidential election" should confirm or disprove the bias of the three Czech newspapers in the period between the first and the second round of the direct presidential election. The first part of thesis focuses on selected chapters of media, linguistic and semiotic theories regarding bias. It also discusses the process of direct elections and CVs of Karel Schwarzenberg and Miloš Zeman. At first, I used quantitative analysis to determine if the newspapers were balanced and provide comparable space to the both candidates. Then I applied the qualitative analysis to find out what language and semiotic components used the authors from newspapers to inform the public about the candidates of the second round of direct elections. Depending on the findings, I divide the articles into positive, neutral, negative categories for Karel Schwarzenberg and positive, neutral, negative for Miloš Zeman. After the victory of Miloš Zeman the bias was discussed. This thesis should answer the question of whether the three Czech newspapers were biased in favour of Karel Schwarzenberg or Miloš Zeman between the first and the second round of the first direct Czech presidential election.

This bachelor thesis is focused on the problem of direct presidential election in the Czech Republic. The first part focuses on constitutional changes which are necessary for this to come into effect, including an insight of both the proponents and the opponents from the political and expert spheres. The goal of the submitted thesis is a treatise about semi- presidentialism. That is a crucial section of the thesis and is based not only on studying the classic political literature (Duverger, Elgie, Sartori, Shugart) but on selected methods of measuring the presidential power as well. Miloš Zeman Prime Minister and the President: continuity or change in opinion?
Hnízdil, Ivo ; Švec, Kamil (advisor) ; Mlejnek, Josef (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to analyse opinions of Milos Zeman as the prime minister and as the president in similar political situations in three circuits, while selected issues closely touched the offices of the Prime Minister, or the President. Comparing these standpoints this paper concludes that Milos Zeman is not very consistent in his opinions. It seems that a change of his views is motivated by the current political profit and maximizing influence of the held constitutional post. Theoretical part of this paper characterizes the political system of the Czech Republic with emphasis on the necessary cooperation of concerned branches of state power. This allows readers the insight and the inclusion of individual standpoints of Milos Zeman to the realities of the practical functioning of the system. On this theoretical basis clearly stands out Milos Zeman's motivation to change viewpoint or stay in the former one.

Analysis of the debates of the candidates in the 2nd round of direct presidential election in the Czech Republic in the context of the political campaign
Rozsypal, Michael ; Mlejnek, Josef (advisor) ; Švec, Kamil (referee)
This diploma thesis analyses the debates of the two candidates who passed to the second round of the Czech direct presidential election in 2013. Primarily focuses on the debates in the public service media - Czech Television and Czech Radio. To put into context the whole campaign will briefly examine the debates on commercial TV stations as well. The thesis applies content analysis as the methodology. It measures how often both candidates (Miloš Zeman and Karel Schwarzenberg) mentioned their officially declared programme theses in a total of six debates on television and radio. The campaign is also presented more broadly in order to put the analysis into a wider context. Only programmes officially designated will be considered for the analysis so as to secure its accuracy. A quantitative analysis of the content will be applied in order to measure the frequency of programme theses in the debates researched. The principal goal of the thesis is to confirm or disconfirm the hypothesis that programme theses do not play such an important role in a political campaign in general, nor in candidate debates. I focus on the aspect of how different debates were and in which type of media presidential candidates presented the higher number of their programme theses.
Photography of political campaigns: compromise between reality and staged image
Kardová, Helena ; Láb, Filip (advisor) ; Štefaniková, Sandra (referee)
This bachelor's thesis focuses on photographs related to the first direct presidential election in the Czech Republic published in the dailies the Blesk and the Lidové noviny and in the weeklies Reflex and Respekt. By the means of image analysis and interviews with some media professionals, it examines to what extent the photographs were co-created by the PR departments of the individual candidates. The submitted thesis outlines a brief historical overview of how the staged image of the politician has been used in the United States of America and offers an overview of potentially manipulative tools defined in terms of visual literacy (associational juxtaposition, staged behaviour, Kuleshov effect, subjective view, camera angle, emphasising detail). These tools are reflected in the image analysis and together with some quantitative data and some photoreporters' testimonies characterize the visual quality level of the selected media. The aim of this thesis is to draw attention to the close collaboration of the domains of public relations and photojournalism, which might lead to the erosion of journalistic standards.
